LASIK vs. PRK

LASIK and PRK are the two most popular refractive eye surgery options for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The main difference between the two procedures is the first step. In PRK surgery, the thin outer layer of the cornea is removed to gain access to the underlying cornea tissue, which is reshaped with a laser. In LASIK surgery, a flap of the outer corneal layer is lifted and then replaced when the reshaping is complete. While PRK is the predecessor to LASIK surgery, each options has certain advantages. The outer corneal layer regrows over time, allowing a full recovery after PRK, but LASIK surgery offers a quicker initial recovery period and, for many patients, less discomfort. However, PRK is the preferred procedure when the cornea is too thin for LASIK or with patients who have undergone LASIK previously.
